A first look at the 2020 Yamaha MT-03

Yamaha shows off its new entry-level naked machine, the MT-03. The Hyper Naked line up was initially introduced in 2016 and exploded in popularity across the world. For the new 2020 model, Yamaha kept it’s fun, nibble streetfighter style but incorporated new items. For example, Yamaha implemented an upgraded multifunction panel. In addition to this, the MT-03 has been given a new rear suspension and an MT series exhaust. In addition to this, Yamaha re-directed its focus on the style and design of the machine. The result was a darker futuristic version of the machine we’ve all come to love.

New 2020 Yamaha MT-03 Upgrades

The MT-03 gets a facelift

The first thing to note on the new MT-03 is the modern angular headlight design, a style which has become increasingly popular in the last few years. The lights themselves have been upgraded to dual-LED driving lights and a centralised projector lamp. We’re not saying that the new headlights resemble a demonic robot. However, if that’s the look you’re going after, this is probably as close as you’re going to get.

Also, the incorporation of a KYB 37mm inverted fork and cast-aluminium triple clamp entices bikers with a sportier look. For riders who aren’t familiar with inverted forks, they are by design, stronger than conventional forks. Inverted forks are exponentially more rigid because they mount the larger diameter “slider” to the triple tree. The result improves handling and what is known as ‘connectedness’. Inverted forks certainly aren’t the cheapest forks available on the market, so it’s a nice touch delivered by Yamaha on a budget bike.

While the MT range always has synopsis with a sleek robotic look and the new MT-03 is no exception.

The 2020 MT-03 has a 30.7-inch seat height with tall bars and rider-friendly seat. This machine is designed for comfort with moderate levels of torque; it’s clear that the bike is aimed at younger inexperienced riders. The machine still maintains its 321cc parallel-twin engine with 180-degree firing order. With 44 horsepower and a budget-friendly 50-plus mpg, it’s undoubtedly an attractive purchase for younger riders. The new 2020 model comes with ABS as standard. The bike has a 22.6-inch long swingarm to improve it’s stability and handling when hitting those twisties.

One additional feature to get excited about is the new LCD dash. Keeping in line with other MT releases, the MT-03 now incorporates a digital speedo, tach, GPI and petrol gauge. This critically replaces the extremely dated analogue dash found on the prior model of the MT-03.

Ultimately, Yamaha has refined this bike like an aged whiskey, and we’re reasonably impressed. The overall look of the motorcycle is a lot cleaner than it’s previous modelsmt-03 for sale. However, are the upgrades enough to make current riders trade their bikes in for?
